The 2026 edition of the Roots Picnic is shaping up to be one of its biggest yet, with Jay-Z joining The Roots as a headliner for the festival’s opening night. The two-day event runs May 30–31 and will take place at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, marking the first time the long-running festival is held at the historic location known for its sweeping city views and deep ties to hip-hop culture.
Roc Nation posted on X: “Philly, It’s time! The May 30th Roots Picnic headliner is none other than JAŸ-Z! Pre-sale tickets are available NOW at http://rootspicnic.com now with code: ROOTS26”
Shawn Gee, manager of The Roots and president of Live Nation Urban, said in a statement: “Moving the Roots Picnic to Belmont Plateau and bringing JAŸ-Z and The Roots together to perform are both bucket-list moments for us After meeting with Mayor Cherelle Parker and hearing her vision for Philadelphia 250, she truly inspired us to dream even bigger, and we’re grateful to her, Commissioner Susan Slawson, Jazelle Jones and everyone who helped make it happen. We can’t wait to see everyone in May at the Plat.”
This performance signals Jay-Z’s return to the stage after nearly a year and his first time performing with The Roots in more than a decade. His last live appearance came in June 2025, when he joined Beyoncé in Paris during the final stop of her “Cowboy Carter” tour; his most recent festival appearance dates back to 2019, when he made a surprise showing at Pharrell Williams’ Something in the Water in Virginia Beach. The announcement also arrives as Jay-Z celebrates the 30th anniversary of his debut album “Reasonable Doubt,” even briefly reverting to the stylized name JAŸ-Z across streaming platforms.
Since its launch in 2007, the Roots Picnic has grown into a major cultural event, blending music, community, and legacy. Over the years, it has hosted a wide-ranging lineup of artists across genres, cementing its place as a key fixture in the music festival landscape.
