The Montreal Canadiens are heading to the second round of the NHL playoffs after a dramatic 2-1 Game 7 victory on the road against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Alex Newhook delivered the decisive moment midway through the third period, scoring at 11:07 to break the deadlock. Rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes stood tall with 28 saves as Montreal secured the series 4-3—despite managing just nine total shots on goal.

Nick Suzuki opened the scoring late in the first period, benefiting from a fortunate deflection off a defender. Tampa Bay answered in the second when Dominic James tipped in a power-play shot to even things up. Newhook’s unconventional go-ahead goal—batting the puck out of midair off the goaltender and in—proved to be the difference.

The loss continues a frustrating trend for the Lightning, who have now been eliminated in the opening round four straight years after their championship runs in 2020 and 2021. Meanwhile, Montreal’s victory signals another step forward in a rapid rebuild that began just a few seasons ago. Led by core players like Suzuki and Cole Caufield and guided by head coach Martin St. Louis, the Canadiens have quickly transitioned from near the bottom of the standings to a legitimate playoff contender. After finishing last in 2021-22 and enduring a few rebuilding seasons, they’ve now captured their first series win since their 2021 Stanley Cup Final appearance.

The Canadiens now move on to face the Buffalo Sabres, who eliminated the Boston Bruins in six games. Game 1 is set for Wednesday in Buffalo.
